Searching and stepping

The find box

The box at the top of the object — Search messages — finds what is typed in the conversation shown. It is independent of Qlik Sense's own search and of the highlights, and it selects nothing.

  • What it looks in: the message text — the text a markdown message shows, not its markdown — and the names in each message's header line, where a header is shown. A sender's next messages share one header, and recipients folded into and 2 more are not searched by name. Kind chips, times and badges are not searched.
  • How it matches: case does not matter, any run of spaces and line breaks matches any other, and text is found inside longer words. Every character is taken as it is; nothing is a wildcard.
  • Matches are marked in orange, and the counter beside the box says 3 of 12 while one is current, 12 matches, 1 match or No matches. A + after the number means the search stopped at its limit of 1,000,000 matches.
  • Typing is searched after a short pause, and Enter searches at once. The first match from where you are reading becomes current: in or after the message the keyboard is on, or else the message at the top of the view.
  • What you typed stays when a selection changes the conversation, and the matches follow it.

Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac) goes to the find box from anywhere in the object, with its text selected. Appearance → Show search box takes the box away; the browser's own find then has Ctrl+F back.

Stepping

The object has two things to step through — the matches of what was typed in the find box, and the keywords highlighted from a field — and they are stepped separately, each with its own buttons, its own counter and its own place:

ButtonsKeys
Find matches▲ Previous match and ▼ Next match, beside the find boxF3 / Shift+F3, Ctrl+G / Ctrl+Shift+G (Cmd on a Mac), and Enter / Shift+Enter in the find box
Keywords◂ Previous keyword and ▸ Next keyword, in the keyword groupAlt+↓ / Alt+↑

F3 and Ctrl+G mean the find box and nothing else, whether or not anything is typed; the keywords are Alt with an arrow.

Both wrap around at either end, and the one stepped to last is the one outlined, so stepping one of them does not lose your place in the other. Stepping with the keys while the keyboard is in the conversation moves to the message stepped to; stepping from the find box or with the buttons leaves the keyboard where it is.

Enter on a message selects the value of the keyword stepped to, when that keyword is in the message — see Highlighting keywords. Escape in the find box clears it.

The overview ruler

The ruler beside the conversation shows where the stops are, a tick for each place:

  • The find matches, while something is typed in the find box;
  • the highlighted keywords otherwise, in their categories' colours.

Hover over a tick to count what is there — 3 highlights in 2 messages: email, ops — and click to go there. A click between ticks goes to the message at that height. With conversations side by side and free scrolling, each lane has a ruler of its own.

The ruler appears only while there is something to show, so an object with no highlight field and nothing typed never has one, whatever Appearance → Show overview ruler says. Show overview ruler off takes it away altogether.
