Copying and exporting
Copying the whole conversation
Right-click the object for Copy conversation as text or Copy conversation as JSON. Both copy the conversation the object is showing: the messages the selections leave, within Maximum messages, in the order shown. The corner says what was copied — Copied 120 messages as text.
The two items are there while the object shows at least one message.
As text
A transcript, for reading or pasting into a ticket or an e-mail:
2026-09-30
Ada → Bob, Carol · 10:32
The reload failed again — same error as yesterday.
Bob → Ada · 10:35
Looking at it now.- A date line,
YYYY-MM-DD, where a new day starts. It needs Timestamp (numeric): without it there are no date lines. They are written whether or not Date separators is on, and they are never Today or Yesterday. - A header line for each message: the sender, an arrow and every recipient, then the time. The time is what Timestamp (display) returns, as the object shows it —
10:32above, fromOnly(Time([SentAt]))— and the line has no time without that expression. Without a To dimension there is no arrow and no recipients. - The message as it was written: the markdown itself, for a markdown message. A message with no text is written as
(no text).
When Maximum messages left rows out, the transcript starts with the same words as the banner — Showing the newest 5000 of 9000 messages. Filter to see the rest.
With conversations side by side, the lanes shown are copied one after another, not interleaved: first a line counting them, then each lane under a line naming it.

Can you check the QVD?The corner then says Copied 2 messages from 2 conversations as text.
As JSON
For a program to read: every message with its sender, recipients, thread, time, kind, badge, format, text and KPIs, and — while something is highlighted — its highlights, with their values, categories and positions in the text. A summary comes first: how many messages and rows, whether Maximum messages cut them, the order, and, side by side, how many conversations are shown of how many.
Every key is described in the Reference. The JSON leaves out search matches.
What is not marked
Under whole conversations, the dimmed messages that give the others their context are copied too, in both formats, and neither marks which they are.
Copying one message
Each message has a copy button in its bubble's upper corner — Copy this message — which appears while the pointer is over the message or its sender's name, or while the keyboard is on it. On a touch screen it is always there.
It copies the two lines a transcript gives that message: the header line, then the message as it was written.
Ada → Bob, Carol · 10:32
The reload failed again — same error as yesterday. The corner says Copied the message. A message copied on its own has no date line, so with a time alone in Timestamp (display) it carries no date; a message with no text copies its header line alone.
- A click on the copy button is never a click on the message. It selects nothing and opens nothing.
- Appearance → Show copy button on messages takes the button away. It is on by default. With the button, a bubble keeps room for it, so bubbles are a little narrower than without.
Selecting text with the mouse
Message text can be selected and copied with the mouse, as on a web page. A drag that selects text is not a click on the message, so it selects nothing in Qlik Sense.
When the browser refuses
Copying uses the browser's clipboard. A page served over plain HTTP, which a client-managed Qlik Sense site sometimes is, may not be given it; the object then falls back to the browser's older way of copying. Where that is refused too, the corner says The browser did not allow copying to the clipboard.
Image and PDF exports
An image or PDF export of the object, or a snapshot in a story, is drawn again by Qlik Sense without the reader, from what the object recorded when it was taken:
- Every message is drawn, however long the conversation and whatever Virtualize long conversations says.
- The details a reader had open stay open.
- Today and Yesterday are the days as they were when the export was taken.
- With conversations side by side, the export shows the conversations the reader had on screen.
- The text size is the one set under Appearance → Text size, not a reader's choice in the bar.
- The conversation is the strict one: whole conversations needs the engine, and an export is drawn without one.
- There is no highlighting — no highlights, legend, keyword stepper or overview ruler — and no bar, find box or copy button. Nothing in an export can be clicked to select.
Banners about the data, the line above the lanes and the date separators are drawn as on screen.
Data exports
Chatbox.qs allows Download as data. It exports the object's own table, as Qlik Sense exports any chart's: a column for each dimension and measure, and a row for each combination of the dimensions' values — so one row per recipient in From → To, or in Participants with a To dimension.
